Customers Bank and OpenAI have formed a strategic partnership, marking a significant shift in commercial banking operations. This collaboration aims to integrate artificial intelligence into core banking functions, addressing challenges faced by mid-sized and regional banks in competing with larger institutions.

Transforming Banking Operations

The partnership focuses on deploying OpenAI’s “frontier models” across lending, onboarding, and internal workflows. This initiative is a test for AI-native banking in a regulated environment. By moving beyond basic generative AI, Customers Bank seeks to redefine traditional banking through an AI-driven approach.

The integration of OpenAI’s technology is expected to significantly enhance the speed and efficiency of commercial banking processes. Key operational changes include accelerated credit cycles, rapid client onboarding, and improved developer productivity.

Operational Enhancements and Efficiency Gains

Accelerated Credit Cycles: The partnership automates data collection and credit memorandum drafting, reducing commercial loan approval times from weeks to days.

Rapid Client Onboarding: Automated systems handle KYC and document verification, enabling the opening of complex commercial accounts in minutes, benefiting US and UK-based corporate clients.

Enhanced Developer Productivity: AI assists in writing nearly half of the bank’s new software code, saving tens of thousands of work hours and enabling infrastructure scaling without a linear increase in staff.

For regional banks, this partnership offers a strategy to compete with larger global institutions. By leveraging “digital workers” for repetitive tasks, banks can improve efficiency ratios and focus human staff on high-value advisory roles. Additionally, AI integration enables data-driven decision-making, allowing banks to analyze proprietary data for precise risk assessments and market opportunity identification.

Handling Risks and Regulatory Challenges

The large-scale deployment of AI introduces risks that require careful management. Key concerns include model explainability, cybersecurity, and systemic concentration risk.

Model Explainability: Regulators like the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) require transparency in AI-driven financial decisions to ensure they are free from bias.

Cybersecurity and Data Privacy: Deeper integration with third-party AI providers increases the risk of data breaches, making the protection of sensitive commercial data a critical concern.

Systemic Concentration Risk: Reliance on a few AI model providers poses a risk, as a technical failure or security breach at a provider like OpenAI could impact multiple financial institutions simultaneously.
