China’s central bank has granted Visa authorization to establish a domestic bankcard clearing operation, enabling the payments company to participate in the nation’s rapidly expanding digital economy. The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) approved Visa’s Application to Prepare, permitting the company to begin formal preparations for setting up a local clearinghouse under PBOC oversight. This decision marks a major milestone for Visa in China, where it has maintained a presence for decades through partnerships with financial institutions and support for digital transactions.

Ryan McInerney, Visa’s CEO, described the approval as a key development in the company’s engagement with China. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between U.S. and Chinese leadership in maintaining a stable economic partnership, a relationship that has facilitated Visa’s growth in the region. The company’s entry into China’s clearing market comes as the country’s digital payments sector remains one of the most sophisticated worldwide, driven by continuous innovation and financial reforms.

Visa plans to apply its expertise in transaction security and reliability to strengthen China’s domestic payments infrastructure. While no official timeline has been set, the company will now advance through regulatory processes to launch its operations. This initiative aligns with Visa’s global strategy, as the company already operates in over 200 countries, serving consumers, businesses, and governments across the world.
